In the Banking business, July 2006 is a deadline for implementing an Archive that can handle multiple years of email history. In the K-12 education space, legal retention of mail communications has emerged as as a requirement. Other industries have the need for maintaining a secure, long-term storage capability. MailArchive (MA) is a dedicated, secure appliance, that receives and stores copies of email. This appliance has large on-line (500 and 750 gb disks) storage capabilities and write-able DVD drive to archive older messages. This appliance uses a standard Mail Client, which is used by authorized mail administrators to retrieve stored emails, whether on-line and off-line. MailArchive acts as an email journaling appliance that works with any SMTP-based email system, like Exchange, Lotus Notes or SendMail servers. Mail archiving takes place after the Internet mail filtering process is completed, by sending a copy of the email to the MA. Internal email is journaled to the MailArchive directly from the mail server. Process Steps - Incoming Mail
MailArchive Description The MailArchive allows for the backup and retrieval of emails in a transparent and architecture-independent fashion. It is complementary to your existing Mail Server, installed in parallel to the mail server. MA can store at least many years of emails on its local disk storage (depending on disk storage size) and is able to access historical emails that are stored on DVD or SAN/ NAS. Hardware MA uses standard 2RU HP server hardware in several configurations: Small: approx. 100 users (1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 750 GB [net] disk) Medium: approx. 500 users (2 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 1 TB [net] disk) Large: approx. 2,000 users (4 CPU, 4 GB RAM, over 1 TB [net] disk) All models have at least one 10/100/1000 Ethernet interface, the disk interface is either SATA or SCSI and a DVD writer. All Internal disks are mirrored. Optional components are: SAN/ NAS interface, tape drive. Software MA is based on the standard DefenderWall® architecture and works in the same fashion as MailDefender®. It uses Postfix with customized software, to implement the storage functionality.
